You know what’s funny? Most people don’t realize that Louisville, Kentucky is a great destination for comedy! While I certainly won’t be one of your headlines, I would love to host you at the Inn at Woodhaven for your next Louisville vacation or staycation as you take in the sites, get some solid rest and relaxation, and go for a laugh at one of the best comedy clubs in our area.
How is a B&B like a comedy club?
This is not me trying to tee up another cheesy joke. Bed and breakfasts and comedy clubs have something in common–we can both be good for your health! At the Inn at Woodhaven, we pride ourselves on providing a serene and cozy atmosphere to unwind from the daily stresses of life. Studies have shown that vacationing may improve your health in multiple ways, including boosting happiness and mental health, decreasing chronic stress and pain, and forging solid relationships.
Comedy clubs offer similar benefits with research showing that laughter may boost your immune system, improve depression symptoms, and ease feelings of pain. Fortunately for us, Louisville, Kentucky boasts several fantastic comedy clubs and venues that pull in both the next rising star and well-known comedians alike. Here are a few places to check out while you join us on your next trip to Louisville.
Cozy Comedy Club Venues
You know the type of place we’re talking about: smaller space, close tables, and laughs that echo off of each corner of the room. For an easy night out at an intimate venue, smaller comedy clubs are the way to go. While you may not recognize many of the headliners, that doesn’t mean there will be a shortage of laughs. And maybe you’ll even be able to say, “I saw ___ before they were big!”
The Caravan Comedy Club
1250 Bardstown Rd, Louisville
Often thought of as the premiere comedy club in Louisville, The Caravan welcomes world-class professional comedians, as well as hosts an open mic night every Wednesday for amateurs to test out their material. The Caravan describes themselves as, “Presenting a superior comedy show from start to finish each night using only the best talent from around the world. The Caravan believes that comedy is art, and art is clever – we uniformly reject tired comics looking for an outlet to test the limits of vulgarity. Our search for originality and professionalism is unrelenting, and we pride ourselves on both identifying the best of the day and cultivating future stars.”
The Caravan Comedy Club is open Wednesday through Saturday each week. It’s important to note that they have a 1-item minimum purchase for each guest and include an 18% gratuity on their checks. Check their calendar for the latest events and offerings.
Louisville Comedy Club
110 W. Main Street, Louisville
Located in the heart of downtown, the Louisville Comedy Club is an establishment that has been around for years and offers entertainment every night except Mondays. They offer New Talent Tuesdays for amateurs and professionals to try material and patrons to see live comedy for free! Wednesdays are another free night for guests with their Open Mic Night, which is described on their website as “the best and worst Louisville has to offer.” The remainder of the week features headlines from HBO, CMT, The Tonight Shows, Sirius XM radio, and more.
The Louisville Comedy Club has a two-item purchase minimum for most performances, with non-alcoholic and food options available. Check their calendar for a list of who is coming to town.
Planet of the Tapes
640 Barret Avenue, Louisville
Not just a comedy club, Planet of the Tapes is a unique venue that offers weekend comedy shows, live music, film club meetups, art shows, local movie screenings, special events, and more. If you are looking for a casual night out with low lighting, good music, and a clean establishment then this is your place for a date night or to meet up with friends. This is one of the few places on our list that is open daily, which is convenient for last-minute plans to get out on the town. They definitely do not have a gourmet menu, but what they do offer is sure to make you laugh.
Headliner Comedy Venues
As Louisville continues to grow in popularity, it continues to draw some of the best names in music, culinary arts, and comedy. If you’re looking for some of the biggest names in comedy, you’ll need to head to some of our bigger venues in town like the KFC Yum Center, Louisville Palace, and Brown Theatre.
Rather than scour a handful of individual location calendars, though, we recommend checking out Louisville-theater.com for a listing of big name comedians, along with musicals, concerts, dance performances and more that are coming to our part of Kentucky. This year you’ll find comedians like Nate Bargatze, Kevin James, Jeff Dunham, and Paula Poundstone performing at one of our larger venues.
